What is reindeer moss?

All of our products are made of “Cladonia Stellaris”, which is the most commercially used lichen species. It is more commonly known as Reindeer moss. More specifically, it is not a moss, but a lichen, and in fact one of the subspecies of Reindeer lichens. Lichen is a symbiosis of fungus and algae. It absorbs moisture from the humid air and takes its nutrients directly from the air.

Where does reindeer moss grow?

Reindeer moss forms large mats over the ground in boreal and arctic regions around the circumpolar north. It grows on the surface of bare soil or gravel in harsh environments of coniferous forests. Reindeer moss cannot be cultivated in any form.

How is reindeer moss been collected? Is reindeer moss collected sustainable?

We always collect our Reindeer moss by hand, and all our employees are trained to pick it. It is very important for us that Reindeer moss areas are treated in a sustainable manner to make sure the Reindeer moss fields continue growing in the forests. With our picking method it can grow back as fast as possible. Polarmoss never collects Reindeer moss mechanically which often causes it to stop growing in the areas it has been collected from.

Does it cause harm to reindeers when Reindeer moss is collected?

No animals suffer from Reindeer moss being collected. Reindeers eat Reindeer moss as a part of their diet, but they live in different areas than where Polarmoss operates. Reindeers do not naturally reside in the areas where Polarmoss collects the moss from.

How is Reindeer moss used?

Natural Reindeer moss is traditionally used as a decorative material in the cemetery floristry. Today it is primarily colored and used as a material for interior design products, and also for dry flower floristics, in miniature railway decorations etc. In some countries mosses in their natural state are being used as natural herbs for several purposes. Do not eat or taste Polarmoss products as they are meant for decoration purposes only.

How is Reindeer moss colored and preserved? Does the Polarmoss Colored Moss contain substances harmful to health?

The Polarmoss coloring process has been developed over period of decades. The entire coloring process is handwork, and quality control takes place throughout the process. The colors and chemicals used in the coloring and preserving process are not toxic or otherwise harmful. Please note that even though no harmful chemicals are being used, this product is not allergy tested. The Polarmoss Colored Moss is not known to be harmful to pets, but do not let them eat the products.

In which colors Reindeer moss is available?

The natural color for Reindeer moss in its natural state is very light grey with a hint of green. Polarmoss items are available in several colors. Please see our color chart . As Reindeer moss is a 100% natural product, the base color has natural variation depending on the growth area etc. Due to this, the color variations are characteristic to the Polarmoss Colored Moss.

Where can the Polarmoss Interior Design products be used? What are the requirements for the installation setting?

Polarmoss Interior Design products are suitable for any type of private, commercial and public indoor spaces. Best installation surfaces are walls and ceilings. Please note that any Polarmoss products should not be stepped on. When installing Polarmoss Interior Design products on the floor, they need to be covered with a transparent protective plate. Reindeer moss is an inspiring product that attracts people to touch it. Please note that too harsh handling may damage it and that it does not tolerate tearing. It is not recommended to install our products in places where a lot of touching of the moss occurs, for example around light switches, near the doorways, on handrails etc. In locations where lots of people pass by, we recommend items to be installed out of reach of touching or to be covered with a protective plate. It is unlikely for the natural, un-preserved Reindeer moss to react with other materials. Instead, the Polarmoss Colored Moss contains salt, which may cause corrosion with materials sensitive to it (steel etc.). Please use caution when installing on or right next to salt-sensitive materials. Please do not install in areas exposed to direct sunlight or continuously high temperatures, nor in immediate proximity of heaters and air conditioners.

Do the Polarmoss products change the acoustic properties of a space?

Reindeer moss itself softens sounds, so it is an excellent material for sound-absorbing purposes. In some of the Polarmoss Interior Design products we use acoustic materials to strengthen the sound-absorbing qualities. Polarmoss Flex Element has been tested for sound-absorbency. The sound-absorbance is at its best in the frequencies at which speech occurs.

Are the Polarmoss Colored Moss and the Polarmoss Interior Design products fire safe?

The colored and preserved Reindeer moss used in the Polarmoss Interior Design products is an effective fire-resistant material and retards the ignition of the underlay material used. Please note that un-preserved Reindeer moss does not have such properties, but instead is highly fire sensitive. Polarmoss Flex Element is tested for fire safety and it fulfills the fire classification B s2 d0 – testing requirement DIN EN 13501-1:2010:01 for construction materials.

How are the Polarmoss Colored Moss products maintained and cleaned? Do the Polarmoss products gather house dust? Do they need sunlight or watering?

All the Polarmoss Interior Design products are maintenance-free. Our products do not need sunlight. We do not recommend items to be installed into places where they can be exposed to direct sunlight. Our products do not need watering. We do not recommend spraying products made of Polarmoss Colored Moss with water or other liquids since spraying may dilute the preservatives. We do not rather recommend our products to be installed in places where water sprays or extreme high humidity levels are likely (for example showers, bathrooms or near any faucets). Surprisingly our products hardly attract any house dust at all. If needed, items can be cleaned with a dust brush or by gently vacuuming them with a brush nozzle.

Does the Polarmoss Colored Moss get dry? What can I do?

When the relative air humidity level is under 40 %, the Polarmoss Colored Moss becomes brittle. Then it should be touched only with utmost care. After the humidity level rises, the Polarmoss Colored Moss becomes soft again. It can dry out and soften again several times without any harm to the product. An air humidifier is recommended for room space to keep the Polarmoss products soft all the time. It is not recommended to expose products to long-term direct sunlight, weathering or heat sources.

Does Polarmoss Colored Moss and products made of it have a scent?

Typically, Reindeer moss has a natural, spongy-like scent. Light scent may occur in products when removed from packing. When the product is recently made and new, the scent in items can be more intense, but it will fade with time. Please remember that everyone experiences scents individually.

Does the color of Polarmoss Colored Moss come off or fade?

Since Reindeer moss absorbs and releases moisture in the air, the adhesion of colorants is never absolute. In some cases, this may cause light color stains in fingers when touched. The color is not harmful and washes away with water and soap. After time the staining will reduce. When used as instructed, the color in the items will stay good and does not fade. Over a long period of time some changes are possible. Even though the colorants used are chosen to have maximum light resistance, exposure to direct sunlight can cause color fading. Please note that changes in the air humidity may momentarily change the color shade slightly. The moister the air, the darker the color shows, and the drier the air, the lighter the color shows.

How long does the Reindeer moss products stay good? A lifetime? How are the products disposed?

To be honest, we don’t know the lifecycle length of our products yet. The earliest Polarmoss products were installed over 10 years ago, and they are still in a good condition. When used correctly and in the right conditions, products can last several years. We will keep you posted once we will find out the expiration time of our products. However, if needed, Polarmoss Interior Design items can be disposed of among regular household waste.

3. The purpose of and legal justification for handling personal data

Handling of personal data is based on the registrar’s legitimate interest, contractual relationship and/or compliance with the registrar’s legal obligations . Handling of personal data may also be based on the registered person’s consent, which thus forms the legal basis for the handling, where applicable. The registrar has a legitimate interest in practising business-like, justified and lawful sales and marketing, including customer profiling related to these activities.

Personal data is handled within the scope of the legal framework to manage and develop customer relations. We primarily collect personal data for processing orders. The personal data handled in the register may be used for the following purposes:

We need personal data for handling orders for delivery and customer communications regarding such orders (e.g. order and delivery verifications). Furthermore, the data will be used for invoicing and debt collection and for handling possible complaints. Regarding payment data, we store only the method of payment and the price in case of returns.

6. Credit card payments

Verification via payment card in the eShop is hassle-free and safe. Polarmoss has no access to card details, and payment card details are not stored in the eShop information system. We accept Visa, MasterCard payment cards in our eShop. Please note your payment card’s safety limit for online shopping. You can check and amend this in your own internet bank or at your bank’s premises. Credit card information is always handled in an encrypted SSL-internet connection during a transaction. Our eShop uses international Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode verification services to verify the card holder’s identity. Card payments for the eShop are offered by Paytrail Oy, which is given as the payment receiver on the card invoice. They will remit the card payment to Polarmoss. The bank statement and card invoice give Paytrail Oy as the payment receiver. They will remit the card payment to Polarmoss Oy. Paytrail Oy has an official permit to operate as a payment institution. If an issue arises, please in the first instance contact Polarmoss Customer service. Internet banks: The Customer can pay for purchased goods using the internet payment buttons. When the Customer uses an internet bank as the payment method, the Customer will be transferred temporarily from the eShop to the internet bank or the Polarmoss partner’s (Paytrail Oy) website, and pays for the chosen Products directly from his/her bank account. The transaction is visible on the bank statement, and the payment receiver is Paytrail Oy, who remits the payment.

7. Cancellation rights

Purchases made from the eShop are distance selling in the context of consumer protection legislation. If the Customer wishes to exercise the right to cancel, a return notification must be made within 14 days of receiving the Products. You can make the return notification by email to Polarmoss customer service ( c ontact@polarmoss.fi ). The products that you wish to return must then be sent without undue delay to Polarmoss, and within 14 days at the latest. The return notification can also be made by returning a return form that the Customer must send with the return shipment within 14 days after receiving the Products. Delivery instructions can be found LINK HERE When a Customer cancels an order placed in the eShop, and unless otherwise agreed, Polarmoss will refund the payment made by using the payment method that the Customer used in the initial purchase transaction. Polarmoss will refund the payment amount without undue delay after handling the customer return, that is 14 days after receiving the Products, at the latest. The refund does not cover additional costs incurred by a delivery method other than the least expensive and chosen by Polarmoss. If only part of the order is returned, the shipping costs are not refunded. The Customer is responsible for any damage to the product, and Polarmoss has the right to deduct the amount from the reimbursement, that covers the damage to the Product compared to the Product’s original value. If the Product has become unsellable because it has been used, the Customer is responsible for its entire value, and the cost of return, if the Customer wants to return the Product. The Customer can drop off the parcel to either an automat or Posti office. 9. Delivery or Product errors

After receiving the delivery, the Customer must check without undue delay that the delivered Products are not damaged and are error-free in all aspects. The Customer must also ensure that the delivery contains all the Products that the Customer ordered. Polarmoss is responsible for errors in delivery and the delivered Products according to consumer protection law chapter 5. If the Products received by the Customer are erroneous or do not comply with the order, the Customer must immediately contact Polarmoss Customer service contact@polarmoss.fi If Polarmoss has delivered a Product that does not comply with the order, Polarmoss will usually try to correct the error by delivering to the Customer the correct Product, and the Customer will return the wrong Product to Polarmoss free of charge. If the delivery has been damaged during shipping, Polarmoss advises to leave the delivery uncollected, and to contact Polarmoss Customer service. After the Product subject to the complaint has been returned, and the complaint has been deemed justified, Polarmoss will reimburse the Customer according to the applicable consumer protection legislation. Polarmoss will endeavour to complete the transaction within 30 days after receiving the Product subject to the complaint. If the Product subject to the complaint is not erroneous in a way covered by consumer protection legislation, Polarmoss may reject the complaint, and the Customer is liable for the shipping costs incurred by the return delivery. If the Product is erroneous, the complaint must always be made directly to the place of purchase. These T&C do not restrict the Customer’s applicable rights according to consumer protection law nor the Merchandiser’s legal liability for product errors, including the Customer’s right to demand fixing the error or replacing the product with a new one.

10. Links to external websites

The eShop may contain links to third party websites or services. Even though the third party may be connected to Polarmoss, it is not possible for Polarmoss to control these linked sites or services, as they all have their own separate and independent terms and conditions and/or privacy and data collection policies which differ from those applied by Polarmoss. These linked websites and services are offered only for convenience, and the Customer uses them on his/her own responsibility.

If any of the terms in these Terms and conditions are deemed invalid, illegal or unenforceable, the stated term is enforced according to the widest extent of the applicable law. This does not affect the validity, legality or enforceability of other terms.

Unless the applicable and mandatory legislation states otherwise, Polarmoss is not responsible for any delay or damage caused by circumstances beyond Polarmoss’s control. These may be general strikes, war, fires, lightning, terrorist attacks, amendments to official regulations, technical problems, defects in power/telecommunication/computers or any other communications and defects and delays in subcontractors’ services caused by the aforementioned circumstances. If such a condition arises, Polarmoss will inform the Customer. If the situation lasts for more than two (2) months, both the Customer and Polarmoss have the right to interrupt the purchase transaction made in the eShop with immediate effect.

13. Applicable law and dispute resolution

Finnish law is applicable to these Terms and conditions All disputes related to these Terms and conditions or eShop and purchases from the eShop are resolved in the first instance by negotiations between Polarmoss and the Customer. If the Customer is not happy with the resolution of the dispute, the Customer has the right to contact the Consumer Advisory Board and ask for a resolution from the Consumer Disputes Board. In the case of dispute, Polarmoss aims to comply with the resolutions of the Finnish national consumer disputes board or other similar European authorities. Furthermore, the Customer has the right to file a disputed case in the Oulu district court or to the Court of First Instance of his/her own domicile.

1. Shipping costs and methods

Polarmoss delivers the Products as soon as possible after receiving the order. This takes from 2 to 10 working days, but during high seasons it can take longer time. High seasons mean sales campaigns or the release dates of new collections. Some Products may have a longer delivery time, and in such cases, information is provided in the Product data. If the order includes products with different delivery times, the order is shipped in a single delivery after the entire order is ready to be shipped, unless Polarmoss notifies an alternative. Polarmoss delivers to Finland via the Posti and Matkahuolto parcel services. Polarmoss delivers outside Finland via the GLS parcel services subject to the Customer’s choice and shipping method availability. The Customer must take into account the retention times of parcels at pick-up points. If the parcel has not been collected within the retention time, it will be returned to Polarmoss. Polarmoss will charge €7.00 to the Customer per order for uncollected shipping, which covers the shipping costs and any other expenses that Polarmoss incurs.

Polarmoss Sphere is made of handpicked and colored reindeer moss. Base layer is EPS foam with a metal threaded rod at the center.

Installation

Once you get your Sphere, install it with hanging wire, wire clamps, screw hook or screw anchor included in the delivery. The best installation method depends on the material the Sphere element will be placed. Polarmoss cannot be held responsible of any damage to surfaces caused by installation of Sphere elements.

Maintenance

Polarmoss Sphere is completely maintenance-free thanks to the preserved and colored moss that it is made with. The Polarmoss coloring and preserving method makes sure the moss will stay soft and vivid and remain bacterial- & bug-free even after years of installation. Only gentle dusting with dust brush or gentle vacuum cleaning is needed every once in a while. Island is installed with MDF installation plate and wall part. Screw and screw anchor are included in the sales package for a wall installation.

Maintenance

Only gentle dusting with dust brush or gentle vacuum cleaning is needed every once in a while. When the room air humidity is below 40%, the moss may get hard, but it softens again when the air humidity increases.
